Install Windows Updates without Internet Connection

12:13 PM

Installing Windows Updates requires an active internet connection to download the available updates onto your computer. If your computer isn’t connect to internet it can not be updated. But we all know that in order to keep our computers working properly we need to have them stay updated. What are the options for those that don’t have access to Internet but still need to be stay with the latest update?

Portable Update is a portable free tool that lets you to store update installation files onto a portable USB devices and apply them to other Windows computers without the necessity of to be connected to the network. It works with almost all Windows systems, both desktop and server operating systems, from Windows 2000 all the way to Windows 8. Both 32-bit and 64-bit editions are supported.

How it works?

To update a computer that doesn’t have an internet connection, Portable Update uses an external cache that stores all necessary updates. The cache can be on any USB external devices, such as external hard drive or flash drive. The same updates stored on the cache can be applied to all other computers later on.

To start

  1. Download Portabe Update and run it on a computer that has access to the Internet first. You will need to click the Start button on the main window to download the necessary components to the device.
  2. Once it’s done, it brings up a tab-based window for downloading updates to the cache or applying the updates from the cache to the computer.
  3. Go to the Search tab first and click Start button at the top right corner to search the updates that have been installed on local computer.
  4. Then, go to the Download tab to select the updates to download them to the cache for future use.
  5. Once the download is done, you can find the Cache folder on the Portable Update folder that contains all the update installation files.
  6. The History tab lists the updates that have been installed on the local system by both Windows Update service and Portable Update tool.

To install updates on other computers

  • Copy the whole Portable Update folder and save them onto an external USB device, and run it again once it’s plugged into other computer.
  • Go to Install tab and select the available updates from the list to install them.

Verdict

I’ve been using Microsoft’s own WSUS to distribute windows updates in a LAN setup but haven’t seen a 3rd party tool like Portable Tool that makes Windows Update a portable application to apply them onto those computers that don’t have internet access. It’s a well done tool that’s is going to be a useful not only for disconnected computers but also to a small network that doesn’t have the resource to set up their own WSUS server, or in a situation where internet connection speed is too low to download those updates online.
