Enable iCloud’s Two-Step Verification

For a lot of iOS device users, iCloud is not only a way to sync their data, but also a backup solution and, in some cases, the account they use to make purchases from both iTunes and the App Store.

It is because of the importance of iCloud accounts and because there have been some issues in the past where people has lost access to theirs, that Apple has recently introduced a new two-step verification for iCloud accounts.

With this, only the authorized user of an iCloud account will be able to change its password and perform any other transactions with it.

Here is how to set up the two-step verification process for your iCloud account.

• Step 1: Go to My Apple ID website and log in with your Apple ID. If you use a separate ID for iCloud, log in with that one.
• Step 2: Once inside the website, look for the Password and Security option at the left navigation bar and select it. You will then see a Manage your security settings menu with the Two-Step Verification option under it. There, click on the Get started… link.

Next, you will see a series of explanations of what iCloud’s two-step verification does, its benefits, its requirements and such.

Additionally, you might also be presented with a screen telling you to get back to the website in three days to finish this setup. This is a precautionary measure on behalf of Apple to ensure that you are the one enabling this feature for your Apple ID.

Ok, the next step is to finally verify your iPhone or other iOS devices and to get your Recovery Key.

• Step 3: On the next screen, you will be presented with all the iOS devices that you own or that are registered to your Apple ID. These are your “trusted” devices, which you can use in addition to your password to verify you identity.

At this point, you will be asked to also introduce an SMS-capable phone number in case you need a verification code and none of your iOS devices is available. Only a few countries are allowed to add these numbers though.

• Step 4: Verify your iOS devices by clicking on the blue Verify link. A four-digit code will be sent to your iPhone, which you will have to introduce on the website.

Once you do, your iOS device will be finally verified.

• Step 5: Once verification is successful, you will be given your Recovery Key, which you will need in order to be able to access your iOS device in case you lose it or you forget your password. Needless to say, you should store this key as safely as possible.

Additionally, you will be prompted to introduce this key on the website before completing the procedure and enabling two-step verification for your iPhone or other iOS device.

There you go. From now onwards your iCloud account will be more secure and you and only you will be able to manage it and to authorize transactions from it. Enjoy!
